Victory 21 2000 Mid-Winter Regatta

Kim Carter once again emerged victorious at the midwinters.

Day one looked promising with winds out of the southwest at 12 kts promised.

The first race started with winds of 5mph with an occasional 10kt gust this lightened to 2 to 3 kts by the weather mark. Three boats made the mark, Keane, Carter and Evans. About halfway down the downwind leg the wind dropped to zero sending the victories and everyone out on the ocean sailing in all directions looking for wind. Finally the wind filled in from the northwest at about 2kts and there was a mad dash( If you can call it that.), for what was now the finish line. The order was Carter, Keane, Evans. The race committee then waited about 30 minutes for the rest of the fleet to finish during which time a couple of capri 14s managed to drift in and it became obvious that the rest of the fleets were becalmed at the weather mark. The committee gave it another 30 minutes then abandoned the whole thing for the day.

Sunday was blowing and raining with winds of 14 kts gusting to 20 kts, the racing on the ocean was canceled, with races to be held in mission bay . Bob Murphy and Kim Carter elected not to race leaving Evans and Keane to do battle, Evans went out with the mainsail reefed down to the first batten and no jib, Keane elected to sail with full main and jib. After a couple of passes across the bay Mike Keane announced that he could not control his boat and was retiring. So now all Evans had to do to win was make a start and sail the course . The start was duly made and Evans sailed 2 legs of the course ,then thinking he was done sailed back to the clubhouse. He then found out there was a third leg where a committee boat was waiting to finish him. Needless to say there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

So since the second days race was incomplete the race results reverted to the previous days score.

First Kim Carter (500)MBYC
Second Michael S. Keane (641)
Third Brian Evans(618)CSC
Fourth Bob Murphy (633)CSC.
